Cedar Hills and county discuss Canyon Road

By Linda Petersen
During the Cedar Hills City Council meeting on May 18, city officials continued an ongoing discussion with county commissioners regarding Canyon Road. The county currently owns the road as a result of a swap with the state when North County Blvd. was built.
County officials want the cities of Cedar Hills and Pleasant Grove to take over the road. To sweeten the deal, they say they will set the timetable at 30 years out with the county covering the maintenance during that time. Pleasant Grove has agreed to the arrangement, but Cedar Hills officials say the city is not in a position to do so.
City Manager Chandler Goodwin said the city had a consultant do an evaluation of Canyon Road. The 30-year maintenance cost would be $2.8 million. The city does not even have the funds to remove snow in the winter from the road, he said.
Mayor Gary Gygi said that when North County Blvd. was constructed, portions of it belonged to Pleasant Grove, Highland and American Fork, so essentially Pleasant Grove is swapping its maintenance responsibility for that road for a maintenance responsibility for Canyon Road. Cedar Hills had no such obligation.
"Cedar Hills never gave up any road, so we do not now feel that it is right to be asked to take over a new road," he said.
Several Canyon Road residents spoke at the meeting. They expressed concerns about potholes in the road and about the speed limit on the road.
County Commissioner Bill Lee responded, saying the county inherited this road and didn't want it. He asked that the city submit a written proposal to lower the speed limit.
