Civil War Encampment event offers families a peek inside Utah history

By Christy Jepson
History will come to life at the annual Civil War Encampment event at Camp Floyd on May 27 and May 29. This annual event at Camp Floyd has been happening for more than 16 years and has brought families and history together while learning the past in a fun and educational way.

"(We) like to give the public an experience of walking through an 1860s encampment," said, Mark Trotter, park manager. "Most of the activities are geared toward children and families. They get a hands-on experience with the history of Camp Floyd."

Some of the activities that will take place on Saturday, May 27, and Monday, May 29, are: stagecoach rides, dressing up in official military uniform, candy cartridge making, drilling and marching activities, period-style games and watching re-enactors drill and fire muskets.

According to Trotter, families should plan to spend two to three hours the day they plan to come in order to see and do everything. The activities are free; however, there is a museum fee of $9 per family or $3 per person. The stagecoach, which will only be available on Monday, will cost $3 per ride. You can also see artifacts that are from Camp Floyd during the 1858-1861 time period in the museum and tour the Stagecoach Inn.

In years past, there have been about 1,000 people that attend this event over the two-day period.

Camp Floyd is located at 18035 W. 1540 North in Fairfield. It is approximately 12 miles from Eagle Mountain and 16 miles from Saratoga Springs and 20 miles from Lehi on State Route 73. The activities begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. each day.
