Kangaroo joins Alpine population

By Linda Petersen
An unusual animal has received approval from Alpine City to make its home here. On April 25, resident Will Jones approached the city council to get approval to have a kangaroo on his property.
According to the Alpine City Development Code, "exotic animals may be permitted after review and recommendation by the Planning Commission and approval of the City Council." Jones had previously received a unanimous recommendation for approval from the planning commission.
Jones said the 1-year-old male kangaroo has been sterilized and is not expected to be very big when it is fully grown. Exotic animals like kangaroos are actually covered under the city's farm animal regulations (city code 3.21.9). The kangaroo arrived in Alpine in mid-April.
