Town council votes to pay elected officials

By Linda Petersen
FAIRFIELD — In August, the town council voted to start paying themselves on the condition the town has the money and salaries and compensation does not exceed 25 percent of the budget.

The change is necessary, they say, because the duties assigned to each elected official have increased (meaning they have to spend more time on them), and they're finding they are dipping into their own pockets for town expenses.

But no one is going to get rich off this change. Mayor/Town Administrator Brad Gurney will receive $700 per month while members of the town council and planning and zoning commission will receive $50 per meeting (for a maximum of two meetings per month).

Town Treasurer Hollie Mckinney, Director of Roads Department RL Panek and Director of Water Department Tyler Thomas, will each be paid $200 per month.

The mayor will set the salaries for the rest of the staff: Recorder Natalie Mckinney, Deputy Recorder Vonda Cook, Finance Director David Hansen, Water Operator Matt Allison, Town Planner Tyree Pulham, and the position of communications director, which is the process of being filled. The new salaries/compensation became effective as of August 22.

The council also approved the purchase of a flashing safety sign for $2,500. At Gurney's suggestion, the council voted to use a grant from Utah County for recreational purposes to purchase 1860s non-firing guns and cannonballs for the museum/state park.

Gurney informed the council that the planning and zoning commission is working on a soil ordinance that would require anyone applying for an occupancy building permit in Fairfield to have soil samples/tests for arsenic conducted on their property.

The Fairfield Town Residents Dinner will be held on Saturday, September 23, at 6 p.m. at the park. Prior to the dinner, there will be a kickball game at 4:45 p.m. A tour of the inn and storytelling is scheduled for 4 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and a comedian will provide the entertainment. (The dinner is only open to current Fairfield residents).
