Town officials address accusation of rigged Q&A

By Linda Petersen
CEDAR FORT -- At their August 22 meeting, town officials addressed a complaint by mayoral candidate Kelly Berry that questions asked at a recent meet the candidate night were targeted at her.

The issue came up as Mayor Howard Anderson and the council discussed scheduling another meet the candidates night before the election.

Berry said she felt the candidate question and answer session was unfair in that there were a lot of questions asked which only a few people would know the answers to. She also said that some of the questions were a personal attack on her and that she felt ambushed that night.

Councilmembers David Gustin, Chris Murphy and Mayor Anderson all responded that the questions that night came from the public and that the mayor and council had no involvement with the questions.

Several individuals who could be asked to formulate the questions for the next meet the candidates were suggested by various parties. In the end, Anderson, the council and Berry all approved of a suggestion by Councilmember Gustin to ask State Representative Marc Roberts to come up with the questions.

Anderson said he would contact Roberts and then schedule the meet the candidates night.

At the meeting, the council also approved the disbursement of $2,351.25 for a gravel and grass barrier on the road at the cemetery. The barrier will be composed of landscape timbers and rebar or vinyl, to be determined by Clarence Ault, based on which would be more cost-effective and efficient.

The council set Sept. 9 as a work day for the project to be installed and for the cemetery to be mapped.

The council also approved a letter by Anderson to the county recorder outlining the process of authorizing individuals on behalf of the town to accept or record property for the town. The letter stated that a person needs to have written approval, signed by the mayor and the council member assigned to oversee building permits, giving them permission to record anything for the town.
