Saratoga Springs gets first train park in Utah Valley

By Christy Jepson
The first train park in Utah Valley is being built in Saratoga Springs. When completed Shay Park will include: train rides, a pavilion with eight picnic tables, restrooms, a large playground, two large multi-purpose sports field, a pedestrian bridge and walkways.

The city of Saratoga Springs and Utah Live Steamers Railroad Club started collaborating on this project in January 2015. "With several meetings and designs for the track layout, approval was given and we began seeking donations and grants to buy the materials and begin track construction," said Mike Hansen from Utah Live Steamers.

Once the first loop of track is finished, hopefully by mid-June, the train will be at the park once or twice a month for the public to ride. More track will then be added later in phases. The railroad will eventually comprise of two loops of track with a length of 2,500 feet, allowing riders a 15-minute ride around a small portion of the park.

"For the first year of operation, we will offer train rides either on the first and/or third Saturday of each month, Memorial Day through Labor Day (weather permitting) including holidays. We also plan to offer special events for Halloween and Christmas," explains Hansen. Train rides will be a donation only. Individual ticket prices will be $1 and a family ticket will be $5. The money raised through these donations will be used to maintain the railroad, the equipment and pay for insurance.

The total contracted price for the ten acre Shay Park is $1,879,577. The park is located at Aspen Hills Boulevard and Lyndi Lane in Saratoga Springs.
Utah Live Steamers Railroad Club has raised $2,500 to purchase the 1,800 feet of rail and ties for the first loop of track. However, according to Hansen, donations and sponsors are still needed to build the other loop of track.

To make a donation, please visit their website at utahlivesteamers@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page Utah Live Steamers Railroad Club/Salt Lake and Utah Railroad Historical Society. Their website is www.uvls.org. The company is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation so donations are tax deductible.

The park itself will open sometime in April, and train rides will begin in June.
