Preparing for a great job interview

By Celeste Bingham
Perhaps you are looking for your first job, graduating from college, or making a career change later in life. Congratulations, you landed the interview. Here are some suggestions on how to make a good impression when interviewing for a new job.

1. Research the company you're interviewing for. When answering questions, tie them into the organization. Avoid trying to thoroughly research a dozen different industries. Focus your job search on just a few industries instead.
2. Prepare for common interview questions. You can do a Google search for common interview questions and you will find lists of hundreds of questions. Pick any list and think about which questions you're most likely to encounter, given your age and status. Then, prepare your answers so you won't have to fumble for them during the actual interview.
3. Bring a copy of your resume to every interview. If the interviewer has misplaced his or her copy, you'll save a lot of time if you can just pull your extra copy out and hand it over.
4. Speak the right body language. Dress appropriately. If you are uncertain about the dress code, it is always safe to go with business attire. Make eye contact, give a firm handshake, have good posture, speak clearly and don't wear perfume or cologne! Why am I bringing up perfume and cologne? Because sometimes interview locations are small rooms that may lack good air circulation. You do want the interviewer passing out because you've come in wearing Flower Bomb and the candidate before you was doused with Old Spice, creating a noxious combination.
5. Let the interview committee lead the interview but remember that you don't have to wait until the end of the interview to ask questions. While they're telling you all about the job and the company, questions from you will emphasize your interest in the position.
6. The Timing of your arrival is critical. Whatever happens don't be late! Arrive 10 minutes before the interview is scheduled to start. If you arrive too early take a walk around the block. Keep in mind the interview room may be some distance away from the reception area you have reported to and the walk could make you late.
7. Be enthusiastic! You've been invited for an interview because they believe you can do the job. It's up to you to show that you can do it better than anyone else they might be interviewing.

Most importantly, don't give up! If you've had a bad interview for a job that you truly think would be a great fit for you, call and ask what it was that kept them from hiring you. That way you will be better prepared for your next interview.
