Town officials look at July 24 celebration

By Linda Petersen
Cedar Fort—In its July 25 meeting, the town council spent some time evaluating the July 24 celebration and planning for its future.

The breakfast and raffle did well and despite an issue with flies that they plan to address next year, were well-received. The Lucky Square and baseball games were also popular. The run which went well and is now self-sustaining should start earlier in the future, Council Member Richard Stark said. There was also a concern about speeding vehicles including four-wheelers and four-by-fours.

Mayor Howard Anderson said they need to start the Concert in the Park earlier. Suggestions were made to limit the number of songs for each performer and to have performers get there early enough to do sound checks and have their music ready.

The Cedar Fort Ward, which has historically run the children's games, has complained about vendor booths at the carnival and has indicated that if the town continues to allow vendors, the ward will not participate in the future. City officials expressed concern that if the ward pulled out, with a dwindling pool of volunteers there might not be children's games. Anderson also said the volunteers putting on the rodeo every year are the same people and they are getting tired of taking on the responsibility.

Glade Berry suggested the town have a junior rodeo but Anderson felt that there aren't enough interested kids in Cedar Fort anymore for it to be a success. Others said with the Little Britches, Jr. Rodeo Association, the town's rodeo facilities are considered subpar and contestants are going elsewhere.

The Council discussed setting up a separate account for the 24th of July rodeo and celebration. They would like to have accounts included for each activity. No decision was made.

At the same meeting, the council approved Gary and Vonda Cook's and Mark Anderson's minor sub division applications, along with an outbuilding permit for Doug Chesley. The council also passed a resolution supporting the Utah County Disaster Hazard Mitigation Plan.

The town will have a work project identifying graves on Saturday, Sept. 9.
