Two professional actors join cast of 'My Fair Lady' at the SCERA

By Christy Jepson
Two local professional actors, Marvin Payne and Mindy Smoot Robbins, have joined the cast of "My Fair Lady" at the SCERA in Orem for a "loverly" show now in production throughMay 6.

The two actors are playing the lead roles of Professor Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. Marvin Payne brings to the stage decades of theatrical experience. He is a professional actor, writer, songwriter, recording artist and singer. He has performed in everything from Shakespeare to "Phantom" but will probably be remembered most as the dad in the original "Saturday's Warrior" movie.

Mindy Smoot Robbins is a successful Broadway performer and the owner and artistic director of the Utah Conservatory of Performing Arts. She has toured with the Broadway company of "Les MIserables" in which she covered the role of Eponine who was played by Sutton Foster. She has performed several times at Tuachan and Tokyo Disney as well as with the Brigham Young University Young Ambassadors and Lagoon's Music USA. She has recorded for Disney, done radio commercials and was a guest star on the national television series "Touched by an Angel."

"I have collaborated with both Mindy and Marvin," said director Chase Ramsey in a press release, "which is a big reason I encourage people to see this show. Mindy is the strongest person I have ever met, and I am mirroring that quality to provide a true match for the Henry Higgins character. As for Marvin, he is even more of a joy than you would think. He definitely has a fan base, and he has earned it."

The messages of this musical are timeless and for all ages. Near the end of the musical, Eliza explains to Professor Higgins that his problem is that he always treated her like an ordinary flower girl; however his colleague, Colonel Pickering, always treated her like a lady.
"I love this message and believe it is essential that we treat people in the best possible way, especially in our world today," Ramsey said in a press release.

Smoot explained her idea of another important message. "'My Fair Lady' has many, but to me one of the most important is Eliza's fierce determination to rise. If we don't like our circumstance, with hard work, and a little bit of luck, we can change it. I think this is a valuable lesson for people of all ages."

Other main roles include Marc Haddock as Colonel Pickering, Robert Holcombe as Alfred Doolittle and Gabriel Spencer as Freddy. Kelsey Mariner will play the role of Eliza on April 20 and May 4.

Well-known songs from the musical include "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" "With a Little Bit of Luck," "The Rain in Spain," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "Get Me to the Church on Time."

"My Fair Lady" will play on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. through May 6 at the SCERA Center for the Arts, 745 S. State, Orem. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for children age 3-11 and seniors age 65 and older.
